Charles Carpenter

July 22, 1936 July 19, 2018

Charlie Carpenter of Deford, age 81, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018. He was born in Caro Michigan to Alice and Merrill Carpenter. He was a graduate of Caro High school and later completed an Agricultural Short Course at Michigan State. Charlie was drafted to the US Army in 1959 where he was stationed in Germany, serving until his honorable discharge in 1962. Upon his return from the service, he and wife Marilyn moved to Deford. He was a lifelong farmer and farrier and worked as a weighmaster at several stockyards in the thumb area. Charlie was a 4th generation horseman and was a charter member of the first horse club in Tuscola County. His grandfather showed Percherons and his father Merrill had Standard bred race horses. He was a staple at the Tuscola County Fair from the time he was a young boy.  Charlie raised and exhibited shorthorn cattle and saddle horses at the county fairs in his youth. As a young man he could be found shoeing horses under the front porch of the old Racehorse barn during fair week. When his children became old enough, he taught them how to care for and exhibit animals as well. He gave many hours to the fair, working the sale ring at the 4H livestock show, running horseshows, and just doing whatever needed doing. He had a great passion for helping people and teaching kids about animals, sportsmanship, and life. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend to so many and is sorely missed.
